Morning Briefing 10/04: Barkov Out Long-Term, Sanderson Hurt as Yakemchuk Takes Ottawa's PP1, Pettersson's Hits at a Career High

Published 4 October 2026, 7:46 am ET

TL;DR

  • Aleksander Barkov placed on long-term injured reserve with a knee injury after leaving the Florida Panthers' lineup.
  • Nick Suzuki posted 1G 3A last night, a 4-point night well above his 1.23 per-game average.
  • Sebastian Aho scored twice and posted 2G 1A despite generating 0.90 expected goals, opening a window of luck.
  • Jake Sanderson left Ottawa's win over Toronto after 4:29 with a lower-body injury; Carter Yakemchuk ran the top power play in his place.
  • Elias Pettersson has 16 hits and 36 faceoff wins in three games, both far past any season of his career.
  • Ten first-unit power-play skaters rostered under 30% had a point last night, led by Tommy Novak (2G 1A, 1.7% rostered).

Barkov out long-term with knee injury

FLA · C The Panthers placed captain Aleksander Barkov on long-term injured reserve on Saturday following a left leg injury suffered against San Jose two days prior. The team said an MRI was scheduled but has not released results. Barkov's absence opens his centre role and power-play slot to veteran depth and creates immediate scarcity at a premium position. Per @TheAthleticNHL: "The Florida Panthers placed captain Aleksander Barkov on long-term injured reserve on Saturday, two days after he suffered an apparent left leg injury aginst the San Jose Sharks. The Panthers said Barkov would undergo an MRI on Friday, but have not given an update on the results." Lars Eller has been practicing in his place in between Brady Tkachuk and Sam Reinhart, while Anton Lundell took his spot on the powerplay following his injury last game.

Sanderson leaves early; Yakemchuk takes the top power play

OTT · D Jake Sanderson played 4:29 before leaving Ottawa's 3-2 win over Toronto. He did not take a shift in the last 7:15 of the first period (@SunGarrioch), was not on the bench for the second (@SunGarrioch), and Ottawa ruled him out for the night (@clahanna). He's listed as day-to-day with a lower-body injury. Thomas Chabot took on 27:06 and posted 1G 1A. On the power play, Carter Yakemchuk led Ottawa's defence with 4:35, alongside Stützle (5:01), Eklund, Cozens and Batherson; Chabot had 3:59. Yakemchuk is 1.4% rostered and is the add to watch if Sanderson misses games.

Suzuki posts 4 points, well above his seasonal pace

MTL · C Nick Suzuki recorded 1G 3A with 4 shots on 22:43 of ice time, including 1:13 on the first power-play unit with Cole Caufield and Chris Kreider. That 4-point night marks a substantial jump from his 1.23 per-game average last season, but the nights will happen for a first round fantasy stud.

Aho scores twice, beats the expected goals

CAR · C Sebastian Aho finished with 2G 1A despite generating only 0.90 expected goals, working 20:30 of ice time including 4:14 on the first power-play unit with Andrei Svechnikov and William Carrier. The finish was elite; the underlying chances were not. A one-night finish of this quality does not sustain.

Carrier leaves early, status unclear

MTL · D Alexandre Carrier played just 8:32 against a usual 19.1 and left early, raising injury concern. His typical partner at even strength is Lane Hutson. The Canadiens did not confirm the nature of the exit, making this a watch item before tomorrow's lineup decisions.

Five dressers played well under their usual minutes

CHI, TBL, DAL, TOR, BUF · MIXED Nick Lardis (CHI, L) finished 7:41 against 12.7, Jeffrey Viel (TBL, L) 7:34 against 11.9, Colin Blackwell (DAL, C) 7:29 against 11.9, Bo Groulx (TOR, C) 7:22 and Sam Carrick (BUF, C) 7:20 against 10.5. All dressed but saw minimal shifts, either benched, hurt or caught in a blowout. Check injury updates before setting lineups. Per @ByScottPowers: "Nick Lardis' start to the season has been surprising. He has a secondary assist, 3 shots on net and 3 shot attempts through three games. It's not just on him, but the Blackhawks have been pinned whenever he's been on the ice. At 5v5, opponents have a 39-11 advantage in shot attempts, 20-6 in shots on net, 24-4 in scoring chances, 14-4 in high-danger chances and 5-1 in goals. He has a 12.98 expected goals percentage, per @NatStatTrick. His line has become the fourth line."

Kesselring plays 7:54 over usual, replacing depth on the blue line

SJS · D Michael Kesselring logged 21:15 at even strength with Darnell Nurse, a jump of 7:54 over his 13.4 average. Whether an injury ahead of him or a coach's preference elevated him, the extra minutes mark a real shift in the San Jose defence rotation.

Schmaltz generates 8 shots, well above season average

UTA · C Nick Schmaltz fired 8 shots on goal against a 2.5 average last season, working 17:39 at even strength with Vincent Trocheck and Clayton Keller and 3:53 on the first power-play unit. He posted 2G 0A. High volume nights from a role with power-play time carry weight.

Kempe and Kindel both shoot well above normal

LAK, PIT · R / C Adrian Kempe (LAK) finished with 6 shots against his 2.8 average last season, posting 1G 1A with 22:00 of ice time including 3:04 on the first power-play unit alongside Artemi Panarin and Quinton Byfield. Ben Kindel (PIT) added 5 shots against a 2 average, posting 1G 0A with 14:18 of even-strength minutes and 3:04 on power play.

Pettersson's hits and faceoff wins at new levels

VAN · C Elias Pettersson has 16 hits in three games, eight in each of the last two, after none in the opener. That is 5.3 a game; his most physical season was 2023-24 at 1.52 (125 hits), and he sat at 0.91 last season. He has also won 36 faceoffs, 12 a game at 50%, against a career high of 8.7 a game last season. The hits are not empty ones: his open-ice hit on Zayne Parekh last night turned into the Canucks' rush the other way and the goal that made it 3-1 (@Robert_Munnich). Three games is a small sample, so watch whether the hits hold before treating him as a banger-league Brady.

Sorokin and Wallstedt steal games for their clubs

NYI, MIN · G Ilya Sorokin made 37 saves on 37 shots and finished +3.6 goals better than expected, anchoring an Island shutout win. Joel Wallstedt posted 26 saves on 27 shots and +1.8 against expected, the difference in Minnesota's victory. Both tenders outplayed the chances they faced in a way that does not repeat.

Eklund and Boldy each waste over 1.5 expected goals

OTT, MIN · L William Eklund (OTT) generated 1.59 expected goals on 4 shots with no points in 16:16 of even-strength work and 4:31 on the first power-play unit. Matt Boldy (MIN) produced 1.52 expected goals on 4 shots, also finishing empty-handed across 18:05 and 2:40 on power play. Both elite finishers ran hot underlying numbers cold last night; regression toward the mean is the default.

Hagel posts two assists despite cold finishing luck

TBL · L Brandon Hagel finished 0G 2A across 22:07 of ice time and 5:08 on the first power-play unit with Nikita Kucherov and Jake Guentzel, generating 1.10 expected goals while shooting well. The assists carry weight in a top-six role; the underlying metrics suggest positive regression. Per @EddieInTheYard: "Brandon Hagel and Jake Guentzel are the last #GoBolts skaters on the ice for pregame warmups ahead of the home opener against #AllCaps."
