Shesterkin scores a goal from his own net
NYR · G Igor Shesterkin shot the puck into the empty net with just under 3 minutes to go of the third period to finish the Rangers' 5-1 win over Tampa Bay. A goalie goal is one of the rarest events in the sport, and it came on a night he was the best player on the ice anyway: 24 saves on 25 shots, 1.6 goals better than the chances he faced. That was the first goalie goal in New York Rangers history.
Cagnoni wins it in overtime from the first power-play unit
SJS · D Luca Cagnoni scored the winner 3:14 into overtime, from Will Smith and Macklin Celebrini, in San Jose's 4-3 win over Florida. He also assisted on Smith's power-play goal in the second period, for 1G 1A with three shots and three blocks in 21:17. The role is the story: he played 5:21 of San Jose's 5:59 on the power play, on the first unit with Celebrini, Smith, Tyler Toffoli and Alexander Wennberg, and spent most of his even-strength time beside Dmitry Orlov. He is rostered in 8% of ESPN leagues.
McDavid: five points in a 9-7 track meet
EDM · C Connor McDavid had a goal and four assists in Edmonton's 9-7 win in Vancouver, with three shots in 22:03. His line was the whole story: Leon Draisaitl added two goals and an assist on five shots, Vasily Podkolzin a goal and an assist, and all three ran the first power-play unit with Evan Bouchard, who had 1G 2A. Podkolzin played last night beside McDavid and Draisaitl with Zach Hyman out until at least Oct 17, and is rostered in 43% of ESPN leagues.
Barkov hurt in his second game back; examined today
FLA · C Aleksander Barkov left Thursday's 4-3 overtime loss in San Jose in the second period with an injury to his left leg, after 9:15 of ice time. He had opened the game on his usual line with Brady Tkachuk and Sam Reinhart and on the first power-play unit. Paul Maurice told @JamesonCoop the injury is not related to the right-knee injury that cost Barkov all of last season, and @GeorgeRichards reports he will be looked at today in southern California. Florida is also without Gustav Forsling, day-to-day and possibly back as early as the next game, per the same JamesonCoop post.
Shabanov gets Kaprizov and the first power play
MIN · R Maxim Shabanov spent most of his even-strength time with Kirill Kaprizov and Danila Yurov, and took 5:38 of Minnesota's 7:14 of power-play time (78%, against a usual 33%). The role was there before the production: no shots and no points in 15:09 of the 3-1 win in Nashville, where Kaprizov scored. Rostered in 2% of ESPN leagues, he is the cheapest route to minutes beside Kaprizov.
Buffalo's first unit: Benson and Quinn
BUF · L Zach Benson took 4:30 of Buffalo's 6:54 of power-play time (65%, up from a usual 34%) and played at even strength with Jack Quinn and Noah Ostlund. He had an assist, a shot and two hits in 18:34 of the 6-3 loss in Columbus. Quinn, on the same unit, scored on four shots. Benson is rostered in 13% of ESPN leagues.
Neither crease held in Edmonton's 9-7 win
VAN · G Kevin Lankinen allowed seven goals on 20 shots, 5.6 goals worse than the chances he faced. Edmonton's Devon Levi won despite 15 saves on 22 shots, 3.9 worse than expected. Marco Rossi had two goals and an assist for Vancouver in the loss.
Murphy carries Edmonton's defence
EDM · D Connor Murphy played 24:47, seven minutes above his usual 17.5, most of it beside Ryan Shea, with six blocked shots. Shakir Mukhamadullin played only 10:01 against a usual 17.1.
Provorov on injured reserve
CBJ · D Ivan Provorov is on injured reserve, week-to-week with a lower-body injury, the team told @Aportzline. It is the first injury absence of a 778-game career; coach Bowness said he is "absolutely heartbroken", per Portzline.
Celebrini: three assists, seven shots
SJS · C Macklin Celebrini set up three goals in San Jose's 4-3 overtime win over Florida, with seven shots in 22:57 and 5:21 on the first power-play unit.
Vejmelka: a 15-save shutout
UTA · G Karel Vejmelka stopped all 15 shots in Utah's 6-0 win over Chicago, 1.8 goals better than expected on a quiet night.
New Jersey's shot volume
NJD · D New Jersey outshot Philadelphia 44-25 in a 3-2 overtime win built on 8:20 of power-play time. Dougie Hamilton scored on six shots, Jesper Bratt had an assist and six shots, and both Jack and Luke Hughes scored on five shots each. Philadelphia's Joseph Woll made 41 saves, 1.4 goals better than expected.
