The power-play seats that changed hands: 25 skaters promoted and 15 clubs with a seat to fill
September 20, 2026. Power-play share is a skater's own power-play seconds over his club's power-play seconds in the games he dressed for, 2025-26 regular season. Last season's units are the top five and next five by that share at each club. This season's are the published depth charts. Goalies are excluded. Minimum 20 games with the club.
A power play has five seats, and they are the most concentrated scoring resource in the sport. They are also the slowest thing on a draft board to reprice, because the price is built from last season's point total and last season's point total was earned with last season's seats.
Comparing the 2026-27 charts against the seats players actually held in 2025-26: 25 skaters have been promoted onto a top unit, and 15 clubs lost a first-unit player outright. Every name below is a change in seat, not a change in our opinion.

Sorted by last season's share, so the players at the top are the ones whose point totals were built with the least power-play time and have the furthest to travel.

Reading the tables
The trend column is the sharper of the two share numbers. A player whose share was already climbing over his final twenty games was being promoted before camp opened, and the chart is confirming something the ice time had already started. A player promoted while his share fell all season is a camp decision with nothing behind it yet, which is the weaker kind of evidence and should be priced as such.
Units are ranked by share rather than by total power-play minutes, because minutes reward availability. Ranking by raw time put Artemi Panarin on a second unit at both of his clubs last season, when he took 77% of the Rangers' power play and 81% of Los Angeles', and it would have published him here as promoted onto a unit he never left. Matthew Tkachuk, Evgeni Malkin and Quinn Hughes all failed the same way. Share fixes all four.
Players with fewer than 20 games for the club are excluded whatever their share, because a high share across a handful of games is a call-up rather than a role. Ilya Protas took 64.7% of Washington's power play in four games last season and is exactly the row this rule removes.
On a top unit with no qualifying 2025-26 power-play season, so absent from the tables rather than shown at zero: Aleksander Barkov, Roman Kantserov.
Charts in September are not opening-night units. The camp column names the writer where a report since 17 September places a player on the unit the chart gives him, reads 'differs' where a report puts him somewhere else, and is blank where no report has addressed him yet.
